Mr. Juvenal Kajelijeli, a former Bourgmestre (Mayor) of Mukingo, was today transferred to the Tribunal's Detention Facility in Arusha from West Africa, where he has been held in connection with the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

Mr. Kajelijeli was arrested and detained in the Republic of Benin on 5 June 1998 pursuant to a request by the Prosecutor of the Tribunal under Rule 40 of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence of the ICTR. [Rule 40 of the Tribunal's Rules provide that the prosecutor may request any State to arrest a suspect provisionally].

The transfer of Mr. Kajelijeli brings to 31 the number of people presently detained in Arusha in connection with the mass atrocities in Rwanda four years ago.

Akayesu Pre-sentencing Hearing set for 28 September 1998

Trial Chamber 1 will hold the pre-sentencing hearing in the Akayesu case on 28 September 1998. Akayesu was found guilty of nine counts of Genocide and Crimes against Humanity by the Chamber on 2 September. He was not found guilty of six counts of Violations of the Geneva Convention. It is expected that Akayesu will be sentenced as soon as possible after the pre-sentencing hearing.

Kayishema Concludes Testimony in his Defence

Clement Kayishema concluded his testimony in his own defence in his trial before Trial Chamber lI on 9 September. The Prosecution has started cross examining the accused.

In his testimony, Mr. Kayishema, a medical doctor, said he was not involved in the genocide in Rwanda in 1994 and he was incapable of stopping the massacres that took place in Kibuye prefecture where he was the Prefect (Governor) at the time. He is jointly charged with Obed Ruzindana, a former businessman in Kibuye with Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity, and Violations of Article 3 Common to the Geneva Convention and of Additional Protocol 2 thereto.
