End of the fourth Plenary Session of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda

The fourth Plenary Session of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which started on 2 June 1997 at the seat of the Tribunal in Arusha in the United Republic of Tanzania, ended today, Friday 6 June 1997.

The closing ceremony was chaired by Judge Laïty Kama, President of the ICTR, who was re-elected during the Session for a term of two years. During the fourth Session, the Judges adopted a number of amendments to the Rules of Procedure and Evidence and to the Directive on the Assignment of Defence Counsel. A draft annual report to be presented to the General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council at the end of the year was discussed, and a draft yearbook for the Tribunal for the 1994-1996 period was approved.

The Plenary Session of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda decided that a delegation, led by the President and composed, among others, of Judges of the Appeals Chamber from the Hague, would make an official visit to Rwanda during the month of June. Outside the Session, the Judges had productive meetings with Ms. Joy Mukanyange, the Rwandan Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania.

A press conference was held this Friday at 11.00 hours, at the seat of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. The President of the Tribunal, Judge Laïty Kama, Judge Gabrielle Kirk McDonald of the Appeals Chamber, the Registrar and the Deputy Prosecutor of the Tribunal met with the local and international press.
