German President Meets with ICTR President

On the occasion of his visit to Tanzania, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany H.E. Johannes Rau today met in Arusha with Judge Erik Møse, President of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). The meeting was also attended by H.E. Jakaya Mirisho Kikwete, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Tanzania and Mr. Mohamed Babu, Arusha Regional Commissioner.

The talks, which were fruitful and successful, confirmed the German support and commitment to the ICTR. They covered areas related to the progress of ICTR judicial activities, its completion strategy and the importance of its outreach efforts to Rwanda.

During the meeting, the participants also discussed the possibility of strengthening the support of the Deutsche Welle (German Radio Broadcasting station) in covering ICTR proceedings.

The ICTR President Judge Møse commended the support the Tribunal was receiving from the Government and the people of Germany. He said Germany was steadfast in its support to the work of the ICTR through the United Nations and the European Union.

President Rau’s delegation included his wife Mrs. Christina Rau, H.E. Enno Barker, German Ambassador to Tanzania, members of the German parliament, high ranking officials and journalists. President Møse was accompanied by Mr. Roland Amoussouga, ICTR Spokesperson and Chief of the External Relations and Strategic Planning Section.
