Trial of former militia ends

Hearings in the trial of Georges Rutaganda were completed yesterday when the Prosecution and the Defence made their closing submissions before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Rutaganda, a former leader of the Interahamwe militia and businessman, was arrested in Lusaka, Zambia, on 10 October 1995 and transferred to the UN Detention Facility in Arusha on 26 May 1996. He pleaded not guilty to eight counts charging him with genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the Geneva conventions. The charges concern, in particular, massacres committed in Kigali and in the Masango commune in central Rwanda in 1994.

The Prosecution has asked the Tribunal to impose the maximum sentence of life imprisonment on Rutaganda.

No date has yet been fixed for delivery of the judgment in this case.
