Visit of the Prosecutor- General of Rwanda to the Tribunal

The Prosecutor-General of Rwanda, Mr. Richard Muhumuza today ended a three day working visit at the ICTR in Arusha. Mr Muhumuza who was accompanied by his Legal Advisor, Ms. Florida Kabasinga, was in Arusha at the invitation of the ICTR/MICT Prosecutor, Justice Hassan B Jallow.

Mr. Muhumuza who arrived Arusha on Wednesday 9 July 2014 held a series of meetings with the ICTR President, Judge Vagn Joensen, the Registrar, Mr Bongani Majola and his host the ICTR/MICT Prosecutor, Justice Jallow.

In his meeting with the ICTR/MICT Prosecutor, Mr Muhumuza briefed him on the progress in respect of prosecutions in Rwanda of persons referred by the Tribunal and those extradited from different countries to face prosecution for international crimes in Rwanda. He outlined the challenges of prosecuting international crimes in a domestic jurisdiction and explored opportunities for further cooperation and mutual legal assistance between his office and the OTP in respect of both trials and the tracking of fugitives.

Justice Jallow on his part assured his guest of the continued support of the OTP in Rwanda’s efforts to bring international war criminals to justice and said the OTP had much to share in terms of lessons learned and best practices that would be made available to the National Public Prosecutions Authority in Rwanda.

The visiting delegation returns to Rwanda today.
